Shoulder pain is one of the most common issues affecting millions of people, often leading to disrupted sleep and daily discomfort. While there can be multiple factors contributing to shoulder pain, one often-overlooked aspect is our sleeping position. Making adjustments to how we sleep can significantly alleviate shoulder pain and promote healing.

The position in which we sleep directly affects the alignment and tension on our muscles and joints, particularly around the shoulder. Poor sleeping posture—such as lying on the affected side or resting an arm under the head—can exacerbate shoulder pain and delay recovery. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Venkatesh Movva, a specialist in regenerative medicine and founder of RegenOrthoSport in Hyderabad and Dallas, highlighted how sleeping positions can alleviate shoulder pain.

Shoulder Pain: The Role Of Sleeping Position In Relief And Recovery

Experts suggest that sleeping on your back or on the side opposite the painful shoulder can help reduce joint pressure. “Sleeping on your back allows for proper alignment of the spine and shoulders, reducing strain on the joint,” says Dr. Movva. “If sleeping on your side is more comfortable, it is advisable to use a pillow to support the affected arm, ensuring it doesn’t collapse under the body’s weight.”

Dr. Movva also emphasized the importance of choosing the right pillow. A medium-firm pillow helps maintain the natural curve of the neck and provides adequate support for the shoulder joint. Additionally, posture plays a key role in maintaining shoulder health. Poor posture during daily activities often worsens shoulder pain. Strengthening the muscles around the shoulder and maintaining proper posture, particularly while sitting and standing, can prevent chronic pain.

“Adding stretching and strengthening exercises to your routine, along with adopting proper sleeping positions, can provide long-term relief and help prevent future shoulder issues,” says Dr. Movva.

In conclusion, Dr. Movva advises that consistency is key. By incorporating these small changes into daily habits, individuals can alleviate shoulder pain and lead a more active and pain-free lifestyle.
