Independence Day 2023: India is all set to celebrate the historic occasion of Independence Day on Tuesday (August 15) with great grandeur and enthusiasm. Independence Day or Swatantrata Diwas holds immense significance and emotions for every citizen of the nation. Long back in history, India gained its freedom from British colonial rule in 1947. It is a special day that commemorates the valour and spirit of the great Indian freedom fighters who fought for the independence of the country from colonial British rule.
The celebrations of Independence Day include a speech from the honourable Prime Minister, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and singing of the National Anthem. Numerous cultural programmes are also held in schools, colleges and societies to celebrate the special occasion. Here are some delicacies from around the country that you can savour with your friends.

1. Rasgulla, Bengal
You must be drooling just reading the name Rasgulla. Your Independence Day meal will surely be incomplete without the dessert rasgulla which is a popular treat from Bengal. The dish is savoured because of its soft texture and sweet taste, which is why it should be included in every festival’s menu.
2. Ghevar, Rajasthan
Ghevar is a popular delicacy from Rajasthan but is enjoyed across the country. It is a disc-shaped dish made with ingredients such as flour, ghee, milk, nuts, and sugar syrup. It is traditionally consumed during the auspicious month of Sawan and the festival of Raksha Bandhan. It is a perfect dessert to include in your tricolour menu.
3. Mysore Pak, Karnataka
Another popular dessert is Mysore Pak from the South Indian state of Karnataka. It is made with an abundance of ghee, sugar, flour and cardamom. The flavours of cardamom are enough to enhance the taste of Mysore Pak. It is one of the signature sweets of Karnataka and is relished in festivities.
4. Shrikhand, Maharashtra
It is simple to prepare a dessert made with ingredients including yoghurt, sugar, saffron and cardamom. Shrikhand has a thick texture and a mouth-watering taste that will crave you to have it more. This dessert requires no extensive cooking and can simply be made by using hung curd, milk, cardamom and some other ingredients easily available at home.
5. Chhena Poda, Odisha
From the state of Odisha, Chhena Poda will curb your sweet cravings and leave you drooling. It is made with cheese and is believed to be Lord Jagannath’s favourite sweet dish. You can prepare Chhena Poda easily at your home by kneading homemade fresh cheese chhena, sugar, and semolina, and it is baked for several hours until it browns.
