Independence Day 2023: The historic occasion of Independence Day is celebrated with great valour and pride every year on August 15 across the country. Also known as Swatantra Diwas, Independence Day commemorates the valour and spirit of the great Indian freedom fighters who fought for the independence of the country from colonial British rule.

It is considered a day of national pride and honour. It is a historic day in the Indian calendar to remember and pay tribute to the sacrifice of freedom fighters and celebrate the unity of the nation.

History Of Independence Day

Celebrated as a national holiday, Independence Day marks the end of colonial rule in 1947. It also marks the anniversary of the partition of the subcontinent into two countries, India and Pakistan. British rule in India began in the year 1757 after the Battle of Plassey, after which the British East India Company gained control over India. East India exercised rule in India for over 100 years after which the Indian independence movement began under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi to end British rule.

Independence Day 2023 Theme

This year, the celebrations of Independence Day will be surrounded by the theme of “Nation First, Always First" under "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" celebrations. This year will mark the celebrations of the 77th Independence Day.

The celebrations of Independence Day include flag-hoisting ceremonies across the country, organising drills and singing the National Anthem. Numerous cultural programmes are also held in schools, colleges and societies to commemorate the day.

Republic Day

Another major historic day marked in the Indian calendar is Republic Day which is celebrated annually on January 26. It is a special occasion that marks the day when the Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950. It is one of the three national holidays including Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. The occasion of Republic Day marks the official enactment day of the Indian constitution.

The Constitution of India is known as the Supreme law of the country that lays down the framework of how the government should work, fundamental rights, directive principles and duties of the citizens. The extensive framework of the Constitution was written by Dr BR Ambedkar.
