International Nurses Day 2024: Every year, the special occasion of International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. It is an ideal opportunity to celebrate the contributions of nurses in the health sector. It celebrates health workers who work tirelessly in endless shifts and take care of their patients with utmost love and patience. International Nurses Day 2024 History

The occasion of International Nurses Day celebrates the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale who was born in 1820 and is known as the ‘Foundational Philosopher of Modern Nursing.’ The history of International Nurses Day dates back to 1953. Dorothy Sutherland, a U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare official, proposed to President Dwight D. Eisenhower to establish a day dedicated to nurses. But on 12 January 1974, May month was chosen to celebrate Nurses Day to commemorate Florence Nightingale’s birth. Since then, Nurses Day has been celebrated on May 12 and nurse kits are distributed by ICN.

Every year on Nurses Day, ICN promotes the distribution of educational materials to emphasise the contributions of nurses across the globe. This global event serves as an opportunity to reshape perceptions of nursing, demonstrating how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits.  On this occasion, WHO highlights the vital roles of nurses over the years and showcases the levels of nursing in various regions of the world.

The theme for International Nurses Day 2024 was announced by Dr Pamela Cipriano, president of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) as 'the economic power of care'.
