International Sign Language Day 2023: On September 23, people from all around the globe celebrate this day. Its purpose is to appreciate and promote the vibrant culture and means of communication of the Deaf population. This day is meant to serve as a reminder of the significance of sign language as a basic human right for the deaf.

The International Day of Sign Languages was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 19, 2017, and it was observed for the first time as part of the International Week of the Deaf, which runs from September 24 to 30.

The first International Week of the Deaf took place in September 1958, and since then it has grown into an international organization that promotes harmony within the deaf community. Since then, September 23 has been observed as the International Day of Sign Languages.

The World Federation of the Deaf estimates that there are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide. Over 80% of them are found in underdeveloped nations. More than 300 different sign languages are used by all of these individuals.

The UN's resolution establishing this day recognises the importance of early exposure to sign language and high-quality instruction in sign language for the deaf person's development. In addition, the theme of this year's International Day of Sign Languages is "A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere!" The theme for this year mainly focuses on unity, which can be achieved through the use of sign language.
