Protein has always been a pro-health choice in food. It plays an essential part in the diet and aids in the process of formation and repair of muscles. But what if these ‘building blocks’ of the body became the reason for excruciating pain caused by kidney stones? Protein, especially which is consumed via a non-dairy source such as chicken and fish produces acid in the body during the process of metabolism. Acidic urine is the primary factor that causes the formation of uric acid kidney stones.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Luvdeep Dogra, Consultant Nephrology, Manipal Hospital, Jaipur explained how kidney stones can be formed from the excess protein in the diet.

What happens when there is an excess of protein?

One must consider the source of protein as its effect varies. There are good protein sources such as seafood, lentils, beans and other plant proteins. The bad proteins, however, are abundant in the protein quotient but bring along high levels of saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium in the body. These include red meats, animal protein and processed meats.

Animal protein raises acid levels in the urine which creates a suitable environment for the formation of calcium oxalate or uric acid stones to form. Apart from this, even when the body breaks down heavy meats, it releases uric acid which in turn increases the possibility of stone formation. A protein-based diet may reduce the amount of citrate in the body. Citrate aids prevention of kidney stone formation in the body. High-protein diets can lead to the accumulation of protein in the blood.

How to avoid kidney stone formation?

The intake of protein needs to be in check, but apart from that, it is essential to take care of these precautionary means too-

Hydration levels- When the intake of water is increased, it flushes out the excessive salts through the urine. The body with the help of water, the body prevents the salts from compounding or crystallising.

Obesity- An individual is twice as likely to incur kidney stones if they are obese. Attaining a balanced diet and weight management are crucial to prevent kidney stone formation and reduce other health risks as well.

Adequate Protein Intake- Every person has a different level of protein that is required for their body depending on various factors like age, activity and health status. One needs to check what amount of protein is suited to the body in order to provide adequate levels for bodily functions but not excessive to prevent stones.

Sodium In-check- A high-sodium diet may trigger the formation of kidney stones as it increases the calcium in the body. Avoid foods like processed meats, sauces, condiments, instant foods like noodles etc.
