Lung cancer is a disease that affects the lungs due to abnormal growth of cells forming malignant tumors that spread throughout the body and destroy the healthy tissues around them. They can be categorized into two major types i.e. non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) which is more common and small cell lung cancer (SCLS) which is rare and dangerous as it spreads more quickly.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Durgatosh Pandey, Head Of Oncology Sciences & Consultant - Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospital Dwarka, New Delhi explained the hidden risk factors of lung cancer other than smoking.
Connection Between Lung Cancer And Smoking
Smoking is the major source of lung cancer as it causes the degradation of the lungs over time, but it is essential to understand that it is not the only culprit. People who smoke are at higher risk of getting diagnosed with lung cancer as the substances present in smoke damage the cell lining in the lungs, making them weak and prone to such a condition.
There are a variety of other risk factors that are often ignored but contribute significantly towards its development. Such as:
Air pollution: It is one of the major sources of lung-related issues and can contribute to the development of lung cancer.
Asbestos: A type of mineral more commonly found in mines, mills, textile plants, or an industrial area. People who are regularly exposed to it are at greater risk of developing lung cancer as they age.
Genetics: Individuals with a family history of lung cancer are more likely to be diagnosed with it and should be aware of the symptoms. They are advised to go for regular checkups to avoid the risk factors.
Smoking: The consumption of tobacco regularly can increase the risk of lung cancer. The lungs degrade over time and are exposed to a higher risk of developing lung cancer.
Chronic Lung Diseases: Conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or pulmonary fibrosis can predispose individuals to lung cancer, as they cause changes in lung tissue over time.
Moreover, the doctor also listed proactive steps to avoid the risk of lung cancer.
Healthy And Balanced Diet- Diet plays a major role and limiting the intake of processed food and taking a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help boost the immune system.
Avoid Intake Of Alcohol- Alcohol is often linked with an increased risk of cancer and should be avoided.
Regular Health Checkups- One of the most essential tips is to get tested regularly, as it reduces the risk and helps in early diagnoses of any underlying condition.
Reduced Exposure To Smoke- Elimination of smoke is not possible but staying indoors as much as possible and using an air purifier can significantly help.
Improve Indoor Air Quality- Use air purifiers to reduce indoor pollutants. Avoid burning coal, wood, or kerosene indoors without proper ventilation, as the fumes can increase risk.
