The Bali breakup curse is said to have begun from a local legend about a Brahmin Prince and Princess who travelled from Java to Tanah Lot for a romantic trip. After becoming intimate, the Prince abandoned the Princess, who then cursed the land so that any unmarried couple visiting the temple would break up within six months. There are several versions of this story. Some people say that the curse only applies if the unmarried couples visit Tanah Lot, while others claim that it is linked to Bali as a whole. Whether the Bali breakup curse is real or not is unknown, as there is no scientific evidence of the curse; it is considered a Balinese superstition rooted in the island’s spiritual culture, attributing breakups to travel stress or incompatibility rather than any spiritual force.

Tanah Lot Temple - The Place Behind The Bali Breakup Curse

Tanah Lot Temple is one of Bali’s most iconic and photographed sea temples, located dramatically on a rocky outcrop along the island’s southwestern coast. This century was founded back in the 16th century and it was founded by the revered Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, who recognised the site’s spiritual energy and instructed locals to build a shrine to honour the sea gods, particularly Dewa Baruna.
