KNOWN AS a social reformer, thinker, writer and activist, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was born on April 11, 1827, in Satara, Maharashtra. He opened the first school for girls from the lower segment of society and strongly endorsed the anti-caste movement. He also took a range of initiatives to promote education for women.

He was a popular Indian activist who was known to uplift society through his efforts and contributions. Jyotirao Phule was the pioneer of the Satyashodhak Samaj, an organisation dedicated to the social upliftment of oppressed communities. He wrote many books and articles on social issues, including the famous book ‘Gulamgiri,’ which criticised the caste system and advocated for the rights of Dalits.
