What Is Karak Chai?
Karak chai is known as the Middle Eastern cousin of South Asia’s famous masala chai. The Karak chai is packed with flavourful and spicy notes, along with a subtle hint of cardamom and sweetness. The chai is comparatively stronger and creamier. This tea is found is almost every street-side stall and has become a daily part of Gulf life. The word “Karak” means strong in Hindi and the tea is packed with flavour and is considered the bolder version of masala chai. The tea is often brewed with sweetened condensed and evaporated milk, giving it a bold taste.

What Is Masala Chai?
Masala chai is popular in South Asia, particularly in India. It is also known as spiced tea and is made by brewing black tea with a mixture of aromatic spices, milk and sweetener (typically sugar). The word “masala” means spices in Hindi, and “chai” means tea, so it literally translates to “spiced tea.”

This is considered a delightful version of Indian masala chai and its popularity in Dubai and the surrounding region is presented with the soft blend of cultures. The origin of masala chai dates back to some 5,000 years ago when Indian emperors used to sip a brewed concoction of spices to remain alert throughout courtly affairs. The drink was caffeine-free and used as an ayurvedic medicine. It wasn’t until 1835 and British intervention that black tea leaves were introduced.

In 1830s, England consumed a staggering 1 pound of tea per person per year, supported by China’s monopoly on black tea. However, tea was quietly growing wild in Assam and was later noticed by British colonists, who started to exploit the plant.
Karak Chai vs Masala Chai: Key Difference
Karak chai and masala chai share a similar base of milk and spiced tea, however, there are some key differences that set them apart. Karak chai is usually thicker in texture and that only happens with the usage of condensed and evaporated milk. On the other hand, masala chai is lighter with a greater variety of spices, including cinnamon, cloves and black pepper. Karak chai is richer and bolder than masala chai.

How To Make Karak Chai At Home?
Ingredients
1 ½ cups water
Pinch of cardamom
4 strands of saffron, crushed
2 tsp tea powder
170 ml evaporated milk
Sugar to taste
Method
Heat water in a saucepan. Add cardamom and saffron to it. Bring it to a rolling boil and as it starts becoming hot add tea powder and boil again.
Pour the evaporated milk and simmer till you get the desired colour. Strain into cups, sweeten with sugar and enjoy!
