New Delhi | Jagran Lifestyle Desk: Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the shravana which usually occurs in the month of August or September.

The festival is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm across India. To please Lord Krishna, different types of foods and sweet meals are offered to him. A special type of Makhan (cream) is prepared by using ghee and sugar which is considered as Lord Krishna's favorite. Some people even prepare Chappan bhog (56 meals) to satisfy the lord on this day.

Mathura and Vrindavan start preparing for the festival weeks in advance. In some parts of the country, Janmashtami celebrations go on for more than a day too. From legends of Shri Krishna's birth, valour and childhood revelry to his love for food, Lord Krishna surely makes for one of the most loved characters in Hindu mythology.
