Lohri 2025 Date: The cherished harvest festival of North India, Lohri is just a few days ahead and preparations are in full swing. Marking the end of winter and the onset of harvest season, Lohri is celebrated with great grandeur and enthusiasm, predominantly in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. This year, Lohri will be celebrated on January 13 and the festivities will take centre stage.
Lohri is not just about agricultural bounty but also about the celebration of unity, prosperity and the collective spirit of joy. It is more than a cultural event and an expression of rural life, a celebration of family and a tribute to the hard work of farmers. Let’s take you through some important things about Lohri that everyone should know.
Important Things About Lohri
Symbolic Bonfire
The bonfire or 'Lohri ki agni' which represents the burning of the old and the welcoming of the new is the main attraction of Lohri celebrations. The power of the sun as the days lengthen after the winter solstice is symbolised by the bonfire, which is usually lit in the evening. It represents light triumphing over darkness and warmth overcoming cold.
Delicious Foods
The bounty of the harvest season is reflected in the delicacies made at this time. The most famous delicacy is 'tilgul', a concoction of jaggery and sesame seeds that represents good fortune. The phrase 'Til gul ghya, god bola' which translates 'Take sesame and jaggery and speak sweetly', is traditionally shared with family and friends.

In Punjab, the occasion is celebrated with vibrant Bhangra and Gidda folk dances. While Gidda is an elegant dance done by ladies that includes clapping and singing traditional songs, Bhangra is usually performed by males and is characterised by rhythmic moves, jumps and spins to the beat of the dhol drum.
Harvest Festival
For farmers, this festival marks the culmination of months of hard work in the fields and the beginning of the harvesting period. Sugarcane is seen as a symbol of prosperity and offerings of it are made during the Lohri bonfire ceremony.
Unity Spirit
The sharing of food, the warmth of the bonfire and the collective enjoyment of the festivities make Lohri a time to celebrate not only the harvest but also the ties of friendship and community.
