Maha Shivratri, the holy festival dedicated to Lord Shiva will be observed on February 26, 2025. Devotees all around the world will be offering prayers to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. The festival celebrates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this day, Shiva devotees observe a strict fast (vrat). Some devotees undertake nirjala vrat (without food or water) while others carry out phalahar vrat, consuming only sattvic foods.
The devotees offer bhaang, fruits, honey, ghee, sweets and milk to Lord Shiva. In the evening of Maha Shivratri, people gather at the temple and worship the Shiva Linga. People who keep a fast on Maha Shivratri follow a light sattvik diet. Those who are observing fast on Maha Shivratri 2025 can consume certain foods that will keep them fueled throughout the day. Here’s a list of food that can be consumed during the fast to keep you energised.
Foods That Will Keep You Energised During Your Maha Shivratri Fast
Makhana (Fox Nuts)
Makhana is an ideal food choice that can be eaten as a snack during Maha Shivratri fasting. Known for its crunchy, light, nutritious nature, makhana is light on the stomach and easy to munch on. One can consume makhana roasted with a little ghee and rock salt or make a delicious kheer with milk and jaggery. It helps maintain hunger pangs while keeping energy levels high.
Sabudana (Tapioca Pearls)
This is a vrat-friendly ingredient that helps boost energy during fast. Sabudana is rich in carbohydrates, thus providing sustained energy throughout the day. Sabudana khichdi, crispy vada, or comforting kheer can be made out of tapioca pearls.
Fruits And Dry Fruits
Devotees can consume fruits like bananas, apples, papayas, and pomegranates during their fast. These fruits provide natural sugars, keeping them fully energised. You can enjoy fruit salads, chaats, or fruit milkshakes. Besides, dry fruits like almonds, cashews, and raisins can also be consumed as they are nutrient-rich and boost stamina.

Potatoes
Devotees may not know but potatoes can be consumed during vrat on Maha Shivratri. Dishes made of potatoes can be enjoyed as long as they contain no onion, garlic, ginger, or turmeric.
