Mpox Symptoms: The virus that causes mpox was first discovered in 1958 in monkeys and subsequently discovered to be dangerous to humans as well. Although it is indigenous to some areas of West and Central Africa, it has sporadically spread to other continents. Similar to smallpox, mpox is a global health emergency, declared By WHO. Its effects can be lessened and outbreaks can be avoided by being aware of its symptoms, mechanisms of transmission and preventive actions.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Neha Rastogi Panda, Consultant-Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram explained how monkeypox spread from person to person and its early symptoms.

Mpox Outbreak: Symptoms, Causes, Transmission

According to Dr Panda, mpox is primarily spread through close contact with an infected person. It may also be passed on by having direct contact with the rash, sores, or bodily fluids of an infected person. Prolonged face-to-face contact via respiratory droplets can result in transmission, especially in closed spaces. Additionally, it can be spread by contact with objects that have become contaminated with the virus, for example, by clothing, bedding, or towels used by a person with mpox.

The first symptoms of mpox typically manifest within 7-14 days after exposure. They first present as fever, severe headache, muscle aches, and tiredness. Swollen lymph nodes are yet another critical characteristic early symptom to differentiate mpox from many other diseases that have similar symptoms.

A rash manifests later, which may start on the face and then spread to other body parts. The rash undergoes several stages of evolution, appearing first as flat red spots that develop into raised bumps that get filled with fluid.

The slightest such symptoms must be recognized and diagnosed to treat the infection on time. Early detection not only improves the outcome but prevents the spread of the virus to others. One should seek immediate medical attention if one suspects exposure to the virus.
