Muharram 2024 End Date: The first month of the Islamic lunar calendar is known as Muharram and it holds great significance for the Muslim community worldwide. It marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and is also considered one of the four sacred months in Islam. The rituals of Muharram widely vary among communities and individuals. While many Muslims engage in an act of mourning by wearing black clothes, many choose to fast on this day. In many regions, particularly South Asia and the Middle East, huge processions are organised to commemorate the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain. 

Muharram 2024 End Date

According to the Gregorian calendar, Muharram began on July 7 and is anticipated to mark its end on July 17, 2024. This day marks the passing away of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet through his daughter Fatimah and his son-in-law Ali. Most of his group of supporters were killed by the Umayyad army during the Battle of Karbala. Ashura commemorates Husayn ibn Ali's sacrifice.

History & Significance

The fruits of our good deeds multiply throughout this auspicious month, and the sighting of the moon heralds fresh starts. During this holy month, Muslims worship more often. The Islamic new year begins on the first of Muharram, which is also a time to consider the life and struggles of the Prophet Muhammad. 

When Is Ashura? 

Celebrated on the tenth day of Muharram, Ashura is regarded as the most holy day of the Islamic calendar. It commemorates Imam Hussain's death by martyrdom during the Battle of Karbala. One of the blessings in the Islamic calendar is the month of Muharram, which is called the ‘Month of Allah.’

To commemorate Ashura, people observe prayers and fasts. According to religious beliefs, on the day of Ashura, the Prophet Muhammad and his companions fasted. As a result, the Muslim community continues to fast on this day in honour of the ninth and 10 days of Muharram.

On Ashura Day, people also reflect on who they are, acknowledge their transgressions, and beg for forgiveness. Individuals reflect on their acts and carry out charitable and compassionate activities.
