Breast cancer is a complex disease and unfortunately, misinformation can proliferate as rapidly as awareness campaigns. This is particularly concerning given that survival rates can vary significantly with early and late stages of disease while the recent SURVCAN-3 study (2023) reported a 3-year median survival rate of 84% across various countries, India's rate falls behind at 68%. This disparity underscores the critical need for early detection and improved access to timely, quality care. With over half of Indian women diagnosed at advanced stages (3 and 4), debunking common myths and misconceptions about breast cancer is paramount.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Lithika Lavanya M, Radiation Oncology, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital debunks common misconceptions about breast cancer.
Misconceptions About Breast Cancer
Myth 1: Only Women Get Breast Cancer
Fact: While breast cancer is significantly more common in women, men can also develop the disease. Although male breast cancer accounted for 1.03 % of the total breast cancer cases, it's important for men to be aware of the signs and symptoms and seek medical attention if they notice any changes in their breast tissue.
Myth 2: Finding A Lump Means You Have Breast Cancer
Fact: While a lump can be a symptom of breast cancer, many breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous). These may be simple cysts, fibroadenomas, or other conditions. Any new lump or change in breast tissue should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to determine the cause.
Myth 3: Using Deodorants And Antiperspirants Causes Breast Cancer
Fact: Chemicals in deodorants and antiperspirants irritate the skin on long-term usage. However, the scientific evidence of what percentage of breast cancer is caused by only deodorant usage is yet to be studied.
Myth 4: Breast Cancer Is Always Hereditary
Fact: Only 5-10% of breast cancers are linked to inherited gene mutations. The majority of breast cancers are sporadic, meaning they develop due to a combination of lifestyle factors, environmental exposures and other unknown causes.
Myth 5: Mammograms Are Painful And Dangerous
Fact: While mammograms involve some breast compression which can be uncomfortable for some women, they are generally not painful. The amount of radiation exposure during a mammogram is very low and considered safe. Mammograms are a vital tool for early detection which significantly improves treatment outcomes.
