Cancer, a stealthy life-taker claims countless lives annually. With cases escalating, early detection is crucial. Awareness and timely screenings are vital for effective treatment and survival. Swift intervention can transform a dire prognosis into a victorious fight against this relentless disease. National Cancer Awareness Day observed on 7th November 2024 reminds us of the importance of recognising early cancer symptoms. Early detection can make a huge difference in treatment success, so knowing the signs is essential.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sajjan Rajpurohit, Senior Director, Medical Oncology, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital explained eight symptoms that could indicate cancer and may need further examination by a doctor.
Symptoms That Can Be Signs Of Cancer
Unexplained Weight Loss
If you lose more than 10 pounds without changing your diet or exercise routine, it could be a sign of something serious. Rapid weight loss, especially if you’re not trying to lose weight, might signal cancers like stomach, pancreas or lung cancer. A doctor’s visit can help identify the cause.
Constant Fatigue
While feeling tired is common, constant, extreme fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest could be a warning sign. Fatigue related to cancers like leukaemia or colon cancer drains the body’s resources. If you’re feeling persistently exhausted for weeks, it’s time to speak to a healthcare provider.
Persistent Pain
Pain that lingers or worsens, particularly if it’s focused in one area and doesn’t respond to usual pain relievers, should be checked. Chronic back pain or ongoing headaches can sometimes be signs of bone or brain cancer. Any long-lasting pain should be evaluated by a professional.
Unusual Lumps Or Swelling
One of the most noticeable cancer symptoms is a lump or swelling in the body, like in the breast, neck, armpits, or groin. Not all lumps are cancerous but any new lump or growth that changes in size, shape, or texture should be checked.
Skin Changes
Cancer isn’t only about lumps; skin changes can also be a sign. Dark spots, yellowing, unusual redness, or changes in moles can indicate skin cancer. A mole that changes in colour, size or bleeds could be melanoma. Regular skin checks can catch these changes early.
Persistent Cough Or Hoarseness
A cough that won’t go away, especially if you’re coughing up blood, or persistent hoarseness could be a sign of lung, throat, or laryngeal cancer. Though a cough can be due to many reasons, if it lasts for weeks, it’s best to consult a doctor.
Digestive Issues
Changes in bowel habits, such as frequent constipation, diarrhoea, blood in the stool or ongoing stomach pain, could point to colon or stomach cancer. Digestive issues are common but should be checked if they persist beyond a few weeks.
Difficulty In Swallowing
If swallowing becomes painful or you feel as though food is getting stuck, it may signal cancers of the throat, oesophagus or stomach. Difficulty swallowing (called dysphagia) is worth discussing with a doctor if it doesn’t improve.
