National Pollution Control Day 2025: National Pollution Control Day is celebrated on December 2 annually to remember the tragic Bhopal Gas Tragedy that occurred in 1984, killing thousands of people and causing long-term ecological devastation. This day is observed to raise awareness about the severe consequences of pollution affecting air, water and soil, while also focusing on the need for preventive measures to avoid industrial disasters like the Bhopal tragedy. With the arrival of the winter season, Indian cities are witnessing a spike in the air pollution levels. What plays a major role in the rise of air pollution is the everyday commutes, which affect lungs, skin, eyes and overall energy levels. It is important to protect yourself during your daily travel.

Whether you travel by car, metro, bike or walk to work, small adjustments can reduce how much polluted air you inhale. Roadside pollution contains PM2.5, dust, smoke, and vehicle emissions. During peak hours, these particles are at their highest. As people are constantly on the road, walking, riding or others, they end up breathing more polluted air than they realise. Here are the smart ways to stay safe from pollution while travelling.

How To Protect Yourself From Air Pollution While Travelling

Wear the Right Mask

Opt for N95 or N99 masks with proper filtration, instead of a simple cloth mask. Make sure it fits tightly around the nose and chin. Replace masks regularly if you commute daily.

Use Public Transport Smartly

If you want to travel by metro or bus, stand away from the doors while they open at every stop. Avoid travelling during peak hours when crowds stir up dust. Sit or stand in the middle area, not right next to open windows.

Protect Your Skin And Eyes

Pollution often sticks to the skin and leads to irritation, acne and breakouts as well as dullness. Apply a light moisturiser and sunscreen before stepping out. Also, use glasses while riding to protect the eyes from dust. After reaching home, wash your face immediately.
