National Sports Day 2023: Every year on August 29, India celebrates National Sports Day. The reason why this special day is celebrated is due to Major Dhyan Chand, a well-known hockey player, was born on this day in 1905. It's a celebration of his tremendous sporting achievements. Since 2012, people have commemorated this day and also known as Rashtriya Khel Divas.
National Sports Day 2023 History And Significance
India will commemorate National Sports Day in 2022 in remembrance of Major Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary. On August 29, 1905, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Major Dhyan Singh was born. He enlisted in the Indian Army in 1922, serving until his major retirement in 1956. As he practiced hockey in the dark, his amazing talent earned him the moniker "Dhyan Chand. Dhyan Chand, sometimes known as the "Hockey Wizard," is recognised as one of the best players in the game. He has scored more than 400 goals in his hockey career abroad.

India achieved a first by winning three straight gold medals at the Olympics in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He received one of India's highest civilian honors, the prestigious Padma Bhushan, in 1956. On December 3, 1979, Dhyan Chand passed away. After his passing in 1979, the Indian Postal Department changed the name of Delhi's National Stadium to Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in his honor. National Sports Day is celebrated to encourage athletic participation across India and every age group must include athletics in their daily lives due to the many health benefits.
