Nelson Mandela International Day 2023: Nelson Mandela, the first President of South Africa served for a period from 1994-1999 and was the country's first black head of state. Every year, Nelson Mandela International Day or Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated on July 18 to mark his birth anniversary.
Nelson Mandela is regarded as the popular icon of social justice and democracy. He is known to have received more than 250 honours, including the Nobel Peace Prize. Nelson Mandela is often referred to by his Thmebu clan name, Madiba, and described as the ‘Father of Nation.’
Nelson Mandela International Day 2023: History
To recognise and acknowledge the efforts made by Nelson Mandela for peace, justice, freedom and human rights, the United Nations officially declared the birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela as Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009. The occasion was first celebrated on the 92nd birthday of Nelson Mandela in 2010, to honour and recognise the efforts of the anti-apartheid leader. On his 90th birthday, Nelson Mandela said ‘it is time for new hands to lift the burden. It is in your hands now.’
Nelson Mandela International Day 2023: Significance
Nelson Mandela led the transition from apartheid to multiracial democracy and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for the same. He became a potential symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. International Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated under the United Nations Campaign Act now. As per the Organisation, “Every one of us can help limit global warming and take care of our planet. By changing our habits and making choices that have less harmful effects on the environment, we can tackle the climate emergency and build a more sustainable world.”
Nelson Mandela International Day 2023: Theme
This year will mark the 105th birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela. The theme for International Nelson Mandela Day 2023 is “The Legacy Lives on Through You: Climate, Food and Solidarity.”
