Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month 2024: Pancreatic cancer is one of the more common types of cancer in the country, though symptoms often appear only in the later stages. Known as a "silent killer," pancreatic cancer has vague early symptoms, making it difficult to detect and initiate timely intervention. This cancer begins in the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach that aids in digestion and hormone production. Contributing factors to this type of cancer include smoking, obesity, diabetes, a high intake of red and processed meats, and genetics.
However, there is limited awareness about this cancer, and many people suffer in silence. During the early stages, pancreatic cancer often presents no warning signs, with symptoms being non-specific. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Amol Pawar, a Radiation Oncologist at Onco-Life Care Cancer Centre in Chiplun, discussed the warning signs of pancreatic cancer.
Warning Signs Of Pancreatic Cancer In Later Stages
- Jaundice: Skin and eyes may appear yellow due to excess bilirubin accumulation, often caused if a tumor obstructs the bile ducts.
- Abdominal Discomfort: Pain or discomfort in the stomach area, often extending to the back, is a common symptom of pancreatic cancer.
- Unintentional Weight Loss: Noticeable, unexplained weight loss can signal pancreatic cancer. It's advisable to get evaluated if this symptom appears.
- Decreased Appetite: A reduced inclination to eat, often linked to weight loss, can be a sign of pancreatic cancer.
- Bowel Problems: Changes in bowel patterns, such as pale stools, dark urine, or oily stools, may occur when the tumor interferes with digestion. Consult a doctor rather than opting for home remedies.
- Newly Diagnosed Diabetes: Pancreatic cancer may trigger the development of diabetes, particularly if the tumor affects insulin-secreting cells within the pancreas. These symptoms should not be ignored.
- Fatigue: This symptom is commonly seen in individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
- Nausea, Vomiting, And Bloating: These symptoms, suggesting pancreatic cancer, should be taken into consideration.
In conclusion, Dr. Amol Pawar highlights that pancreatic cancer symptoms are often overlooked or mistaken for less serious conditions. Proactive attention to these symptoms can be crucial. The earlier one seeks medical evaluation, the better the chances for effective intervention and management of this often silent yet aggressive disease. Being aware and informed empowers individuals to take charge of their health. Be proactive and report any abnormal symptoms to your doctor without delay. Stay vigilant, stay healthy!
