Early Signs Of PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting many women of reproductive age. Early detection is crucial for effective management and reducing the risk of long-term complications such as diabetes, heart disease, and infertility. PCOS is a hormonal condition that affects the fertility of a woman. It usually causes irregular periods, hormonal imbalance, excessive hair growth, acne or oily-prone skin, unwanted weight gain, dark skin patches and cysts in ovaries.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Isha Wadhawan, Attending Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad explained how one can detect early signs of PCOS for better health management.
Ways To Detect Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Recognise Common Symptoms
- Irregular Periods: One of the hallmark signs of PCOS is irregular or absent menstrual cycles. Women may experience fewer than eight periods per year or no periods at all.
- Excess Androgens: Elevated levels of male hormones (androgens) can cause symptoms like acne, oily skin, and excessive hair growth on the face, chest, or back.
- Polycystic Ovaries: While not always symptomatic, the ovaries may become enlarged and contain multiple small cysts visible through an ultrasound.
Monitor Weight Changes
Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, is common in PCOS. Obesity can exacerbate symptoms and lead to insulin resistance, making early intervention even more critical.
Look For Insulin Resistance Signs
Symptoms like fatigue, frequent urination and increased thirst can indicate insulin resistance, a common issue in PCOS. Managing insulin levels is crucial for controlling symptoms.
Track Your Symptoms
Keep a detailed record of menstrual cycles, symptoms, and any changes in your body. Apps and journals can help identify patterns and provide useful information for your healthcare provider.

Seek Medical Advice Early
If you notice these symptoms, consult with a healthcare professional who can conduct a thorough evaluation. They may recommend blood tests to measure hormone levels and an ultrasound to check for ovarian cysts.
Lifestyle Changes
- Diet: Adopting a balanced diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help manage weight and insulin levels. Reducing refined sugars and processed foods is beneficial.
- Exercise: Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight and improves insulin sensitivity. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
- Stress Management: High stress can exacerbate PCOS symptoms. Techniques like mindfulness, yoga, or meditation can help manage stress levels.
Consider Medical Treatments
Depending on the severity, treatments may include hormonal contraceptives to regulate periods and reduce androgens, or medications like metformin to improve insulin sensitivity.
