Pitru Paksha 2024: The 16-day lunar period in the Hindu calendar known as Pitru Paksha is dedicated to paying homage to ancestors through religious offerings. This year, Shradh will begin on September 17 and continue for the next 16 days. During these 16 days, it is believed that our ancestors visit Earth, therefore people perform remedies to seek their blessings. From buying new clothes and starting any auspicious work to avoiding certain foods, there are numerous things one should abstain from during the holy period of Shradh.
As food offerings are considered of utmost important during Shradh, consumption of certain foods must be avoided during this period. According to common beliefs, people who perform tarpan and pind daan for their ancestors should follow a strict diet to avoid certain foods and beverages during Shradh. Here is a list of foods and beverages that you must avoid during the 16 days of Shradh.
Foods To Avoid During Shradh
Non-Vegetarian Foods
People, especially those who perform pind daan and tarpan during Shradh for their ancestors should not consume non-vegetarian foods like meat, chicken, eggs etc as it is considered a sacred period.
Onion And Garlic
Devotees should abstain from consuming onion and garlic during Pitru Paksha. According to Ayurveda, garlic and onion are considered rajasic and tamasic, which produce excess heat in the body.
Alcohol
In Hinduism, eating non-vegetarian foods and consuming alcoholic beverages should be avoided during Shradh. It is considered one of the five biggest and unforgettable sins.

Wheat And Pulses
If you are performing Shradh rituals, eating raw grains, pulses or wheat is strictly forbidden during the 16 days of Shradh. Therefore, be mindful while preparing your meals during Shradh and avoid adding any pulses, wheat or grains to your dishes. Other foods like black salt, cumin seeds or brinjal should also be avoided in Shradh.
