Ramadan is a month-long celebration commemorated by Muslims across the world. During this period, Muslims observe fasting, prayer, and devotion. They observe fast (Roza) from dawn to dusk. To reconnect to their spirituality, Muslims wake up before sunrise and relish Sehri or Suhoor to keep themselves energised throughout the day. They break their fast at dusk with Iftar. In Ramadan 2025, make wise choices to avoid foods that will make you sluggish, rather opt for foods that will keep you going throughout the day.
There are certain foods that need to be avoided during Sehri as this meal is supposed to be healthy and fulfilling. Eating the right foods during Sehri helps prevent fatigue and dehydration. It is important to maintain a balanced diet during this period to stay energised and fresh. Here’s the list of six foods that you should avoid eating during Sehri.

Foods To Avoid At Sehri
Fried And Greasy Food
Avoid consuming fried foods like pakoras or samosas that are packed with oil. Fried and oily food causes discomfort, making them feel lethargic and heavy. Muslims observing fast throughout the day must not consume oil-based dishes, which might make them feel thirsty.
Sugary Food
Eating sugar-based foods during Sehri is not a good option for Muslims observing the fast. Sugary foods or treats can cause sudden fluctuations in blood sugar levels, thus making you feel tired and sluggish later in the day. Sugary foods increase thirst and might make you feel uneasy throughout the day.
Salty Food
Salty foods are rich in sodium, which can dehydrate the body. Salt increases the feeling of thirst, so incorporating salty foods like chips and pickles during Sehri can cause discomfort during the day. It is advisable to keep the intake of salt moderate to balance out the fasting hours without water.
Spicy Food
Eating spicy food during Sehri can cause irritation in the stomach, thus leading to acidity during the day. Although spicy foods are known to enhance the food profile, they can make you feel uncomfortable. The best option is to opt for dishes with mild flavours during Sehri.

Caffeinated Beverages
Intake of too many caffeinated beverages can increase the feeling of dehydration during fasting hours. This can make you feel thirsty and fatigued. Caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea contain caffeine that can make you lethargic during the day. Although adding a small amount of caffeine to the Sehri menu is acceptable, it is better to avoid it to manage the fasting hours without any discomfort.
High Fibre Food
As high-fibre foods are essential for digestion, consuming them in large quantities can lead to acidity and bloating. For someone who is planning to observe Roza, it is better to avoid large quantities of fibre foods like raw vegetables, lentils, and beans, which can become difficult to digest.
