THE VERY first Solar Eclipse of the year is all set to take place in various regions of the world today. This solar eclipse is also known as the 'Rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse' or Ningaloo Eclipse' and would be seen from several parts of the globe. A solar eclipse is a major celestial event in which he Moon passes between Earth and the Sun thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth

Also known as the ‘Rare Hybrid Eclipse’, the longest duration of totality would be 1 minute and 15 seconds, as per Drik Panchang. It is being referred to as the Hybrid eclipse because, in some parts of Earth, a total solar eclipse would be visible while in some parts of Earth annular solar eclipse would be visible.

Solar Eclipse Timings: 07:04 AM to 12:29 PM

Duration: 5 Hours

What Is Sutak Period?

According to Drik Panchang, the inauspicious time before Surya Grahan and Chandra Grahan is known as ‘Sutak’. The Earth's atmosphere is contaminated during Sutak and extra precautions should be taken to avoid any harmful side effects due to contamination.

It is observed for 4 Prahars and during Lunar Eclipse Sutak is observed for 3 Prahars before Eclipse. There are a total of 8 Prahars from Sunrise to Sunrise. Hence Sutak is observed for 12 hours before the Solar Eclipse and for 9 hours before the Lunar Eclipse, states Drik Panchang. However, according to Drikpanchang, Sutak will not be applicable in India, as the eclipse would not be visible in India.

Things To Avoid During The Sutak Period

1. Pregnant women are strictly advised not to venture out during the eclipse.

2. Consuming any food during the sutak period of the lunar eclipse should be prohibited.

5. One should abstain from sleeping, eating, drinking or cutting during the sutak period.

6. Elder people, children and pregnant women can take their prescribed medicines when needed after consuming food.

7. One should not apply oil to hair or body during the sutak of the solar eclipse as it increases the negative effects of the eclipse.

Rituals After Surya Grahan

According to Drik Panchang, it is advised to discard any cooked food and only freshly cooked food should be consumed after Eclipse. Food items such as wheat, rice, other cereals and pickles which cannot be discarded should be protected by adding Kusha grass or Tulsi leaves. Once the eclipse ends, take bath and make offerings or charity to Brahmins.
