SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures the ability to protect against UVB rays which cause sunburn and increase skin cancer risk. We all have heard that a higher SPF rating offers greater protection. Sun protection is a daily skincare essential that no one should ignore. Everyday mundane activities like sipping morning tea outdoors or going outside for work, your skin becomes prey to harmful UV rays. This makes using the best sunscreen for your face every day crucial. However, choosing the right SPF can be confusing. The common dilemma, SPF 30 vs SPF 50 can leave anyone puzzled. Both offer strong protection but understanding when and why to use them can elevate your skincare routine.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Akankshya Baruah, Consultant Dermatologist, Kaya Limited explained which SPF is apt for your skin- SPF 30 or 50.

When it comes to sun protection, many people assume that a higher SPF (Sun Protection Factor) means significantly better protection. But is SPF 50 really much better than SPF 30? Let's break it down:

What Does SPF Mean?

SPF indicates how long a sunscreen can protect your skin from UVB rays, the rays that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer.

Which Is Better- SPF 30 or SPF 50?

SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays. So, the difference in protection is only about 1%.

Key Takeaways

SPF 30 is enough for most people for everyday use, especially if you're mostly indoors or only outdoors for short periods.

SPF 50 is better for very fair or sun-sensitive skin, outdoor workers, beach or mountain trips and people with a history of skin cancer.

Tips For Proper Sun Protection

Apply the sunscreen generously as most people use too little.
Reapply every 2 hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
Don't forget areas like the ears, neck and hands.
Wear hats, sunglasses and protective clothing for full protection.
