Thanksgiving 2024 History

The history of Thanksgiving goes back to the 1600s when the Wampanoag and Pilgrims met at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621 to commemorate a bountiful harvest. Although the idea of harvest feasts has been around for a while in many civilisations, this three-day feast is regarded as the first Thanksgiving. 

President Abraham Lincoln did not formally declare Thanksgiving a national holiday until 1863, during the Civil War. Lincoln decided on the final Thursday in November after receiving guidance from author Sarah Josepha Hale, who advocated for the holiday's designation. This marked the commencement of Thanksgiving as a national holiday for reflection and appreciation.

Thanksgiving 2024 Traditions

The Thanksgiving meal, which usually consists of roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie is the main highlight of the day.
