Reasons For Constant Tiredness: Many people feel constantly drained even after a proper, good night’s sleep. This health can be either tiredness, asthenia, fatigue or weakness. You might feel a persistent sense of exhaustion that doesn’t go away with rest and can seriously affect daily life. Although many attribute it to stress or poor sleep habits, there may be certain hidden medical causes that can often go unnoticed. Understanding these underlying health issues is the first step toward regaining your energy and reclaiming your vitality.

The lesser-known medical reasons behind feeling constantly tired can help you to cure the underlying health issue. In conversation with Jagran English, Dr Amlan Tapan Mohapatra-Associate Consultant Neurology, Manipal Hospital Bhubaneshwar, shares insights about different types of tiredness, their causes and chronic fatigue. Medical Reasons Behind Constant Tiredness And Their Causes

Any disorder causing muscle weakness may be accompanied by fatigue, which is referred to as an inability to maintain or sustain a force. Dr Amlan Tapan Mohapatra states, “his condition must be differentiated from asthenia, a type of fatigue caused by excess tiredness or lack of energy.” Asthenia is often accompanied by a tendency to avoid physical activities, complaints of daytime sleepiness, a necessity for frequent naps, and difficulty concentrating on activities such as reading. 

In contrast, fatiguability occurs due to nerve and muscle disorders or disorders due to biochemical changes in cells in the body, such as mitochondria. Dr Mohapatra mentions, “Fatigue can also be seen with endocrine abnormalities like hypothyroidism, which manifests as tiredness, mental slowness, cold intolerance, weight gain, constipation, hoarse voice, unable to concentrate.” Another endocrine disorder, such as adrenal insufficiency, where the hormone cortisol becomes less or absent in the body. This disease shows symptoms like tiredness, low blood pressure, low blood glucose, abdominal pain and hyperpigmentation in the body.

According to Dr Mohapatra, body electrolyte abnormalities like low sodium, potassium, high or low blood sugar can also cause tiredness or excessive fatigue. He also adds, “Another condition is depression, which also has similar tiredness all day, low mood, low energy, negative thoughts, insomnia or decreased appetite or feeling of worthlessness.”

What Are Other Conditions That Look Like Fatigue?

Another disorder known as chronic fatigue syndrome is referred to as intense fatigue, mental disturbances or mental slowness, unrefreshing sleep, headache, sore throat, painful lymph nodes, muscle pain, joint pain, feverishness, and psychiatric problems. Dr Amlan Tapan Mohapatra explains, “Similar tiredness can also occur in a disorder known as multiple sclerosis which usually affects young females in reproductive age group and has varied manifestations like pain, numbness, muscle weakness, exercise intolerance, stiff limbs, urinary and sexual dysfunction and blurring of vision, decreased ability to sense colors or cognitive slowing.”

Another health issue is Obstructive sleep apnea, in which there is excessive daytime sleeping, irresistible desire to sleep in inappropriate places and snoring while sleeping. These patients are frequently obese.

Dr Amlan Tapan Mohapatra lastly mentions, “a neurological condition called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which causes weakness and thinning of muscles along with twitching, difficulty speaking or difficulty swallowing food, also manifests as extreme tiredness.”
