Travel Safety Tips During Heatwave: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave warning across India, with temperatures skyrocketing above 44°C in many areas. As the country grapples with this intense heatwave, staying safe has become paramount, especially for those who travel every day. The scorching temperatures can significantly impact one's well-being, making it essential to prioritise health and safety during this period.

With the heatwave expected to persist, it is crucial to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure a safe journey. Here, we've listed some essential safety tips that every traveller should follow.

Travel Safety Tips During Heatwave

Plan Your Visits Wisely

When travelling during a heatwave, it's essential to plan wisely. Plan your schedule wisely by avoiding outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm when it's peak time. Instead, reschedule appointments, tasks and outings to a more pleasant time frame to minimise exposure to the scorching heat.

Hydration Is Key

Hydration is everything during a heatwave. Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly throughout the day. Carry a refillable bottle of chilled water and refill it often. Boost your hydration with electrolyte-rich beverages, coconut water or lemon juice mixed with salt and sugar.

Comfortable Clothing

Protect yourself from the scorching sun by dressing wisely. Wear loose-fitting, light-hued clothes made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Add scarves, caps, goggles or hats to shield your head and neck. Carry an umbrella for extra protection. Never opt for synthetic materials that can trap heat, leading to discomfort and potential heat rash while travelling.

Heatwave Survival Kit

Assemble a heatwave survival kit to stay safe on the go. It should include essentials such as a refillable water bottle, electrolyte-rich supplements like ORS packets, cooling accessories like wet towels or face wipes, protective gear like sunscreen and lip balm with SPF, shading devices like foldable umbrellas or hats and energy-boosting snacks like bananas or energy bars.

Transport Choices

Make smart transport choices to beat the heat. Opt for air-conditioned buses or trains when using public transport. When hailing a cab, do so from a shaded area. If driving, ensure your car's AC is working efficiently and air out the vehicle before getting in to minimise heat exposure.
