World Malaria Day 2024: Did you know that parasites transmitted to humans through mosquito bites are responsible for malaria, a potentially fatal illness? Malaria can manifest with symptoms such as fever, chills, headaches, and muscle aches, among others. Left untreated, it can lead to fatalities or severe complications, including organ failure in extreme cases.

Visitors to endemic areas must take preventive measures like using insect repellent, sleeping under mosquito nets, and taking antimalarial drugs. Malaria symptoms typically appear 7–30 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, although in some cases, it may take up to a year. Here are the immediate symptoms of malaria to be aware of:

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sanjay Verma, a senior consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Dehradun, discussed the immediate symptoms of malaria that should not be ignored.

Fever and chills: This is the most common symptom, often occurring in cycles, with periods of high fever followed by chills and sweating.

Headache: Generalized achiness or throbbing pain in the head is common.

Muscle Aches and Pains: A feeling of general malaise and body aches may be experienced.

Fatigue and Weakness: Malaria can lead to extreme tiredness and a lack of energy.

Nausea and Vomiting: An upset stomach and vomiting may occur.

Loss of Appetite: There may be a diminished desire to eat.

Diarrhea: Loose stools may occur.

Cough: A dry cough may accompany other symptoms.

4 Warning Signs Of Severe Malaria:

Confusion Or Impaired Consciousness: Seek immediate medical attention if confusion or disorientation occurs.

Seizures: Convulsions can indicate severe malaria.

Severe Anemia: Malaria can cause a significant decrease in red blood cells, resulting in pale skin, shortness of breath, and weakness.

Kidney Failure: In severe cases, malaria can affect kidney function.

Dr. Sanjay emphasized that symptoms may vary depending on the species of Plasmodium. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to prevent complications and ensure a full recovery.
