Researchers are discovering links between polyester and male fertility issues, as it is often used in everyday clothing due to its affordability, durability, and ease of maintenance. Dr. Karishma Makhija, a Fertility Specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, discusses the importance of selecting suitable fabrics for male reproductive health.
Dr. Karishma Makhija's research indicates that polyester may interfere with sperm production and reproductive function, a finding that warrants consideration for long-term reproductive health.
We are now well aware that diet and lifestyle influence fertility, but one factor that often goes unnoticed is our clothing—more specifically, polyester, which has become a common part of our everyday wardrobes. Polyester is popular because it is cheap, durable, and easy to maintain. This is why it frequently appears in everything from gym gear and office shirts to underwear. But there is a catch. Researchers are beginning to find links between polyester and male fertility issues. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Karishma Makhija, a Fertility Specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF in Rohini, spoke about choosing the right fabrics and how polyester might affect male reproductive health.
According to Dr. Karishma Makhija, this is not just speculation—there is real evidence suggesting that polyester might interfere with sperm production and reproductive function. The research is still developing, but the findings are strong enough to warrant consideration, especially for those concerned about long-term reproductive health.
Understanding the evidence linking polyester to male reproductive health
/>Polyester’s popularity is undeniable, but its convenience might come at a cost. One of the main concerns is how it traps heat. Unlike cotton or other natural fibres, polyester does not allow the skin to breathe well. This matters more than you might think because the testicles need to remain slightly cooler than the rest of the body for sperm to be produced properly.
When heat builds up around the groin, it can disrupt that balance. Research has shown that synthetic fabrics like polyester can raise scrotal temperatures, which may lead to a reduction in sperm count or quality over time. But there's more—polyester also creates static electricity, which some researchers believe might further interfere with testicular function. In addition, the chemical treatments often used in polyester production—such as dyes, finishes, and anti-wrinkle coatings—can lead to prolonged exposure to compounds that are not always skin-friendly. In sensitive areas like the groin, this could have hormonal consequences as well, added Dr. Karishma.
Fertility is influenced by many factors. While some, such as diet and stress, are widely recognized, others—like the fabric touching your skin all day—often go unnoticed. But they matter just as much. If you are planning to start a family or simply want to take care of your reproductive health, your clothing choices deserve more attention. Tight polyester gym wear or synthetic underwear might be doing more harm than good.
Finally, Dr. Karishma Makhija emphasized that natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and bamboo are not just comfortable—they help regulate body temperature and reduce exposure to unnecessary chemicals. That’s a win for your skin and your fertility. Small decisions made every day can shape bigger outcomes. The clothes you wear are one of them.
