Are you also dealing with regular pain and a burning sensation in the stomach? It can be a sign of a number of underlying problems. Do you know that acid reflux, in which stomach acid escapes the stomach and re-enters the esophagus, is one of the most prevalent causes? The term "burning sensation" refers to the entire ailment.

The second problem is gastritis, an inflammation of the lining of the stomach that can result in pain in the abdomen and a feeling of warmth. Also, certain gastrointestinal disorders, including ulcers, may be a factor in stomach discomfort.

Dr. Sarathchandra Gorantla, who is a consultant gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and advanced therapeutic endoscopist at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, exclusively told Jagran English about the reasons behind consistent stomach pain and burning sensations.

According to Dr. Sarathchandra , "the most common causes of consistent stomach pain and burning are gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and functional dyspepsia or indigestion."

Gastritis refers to inflammation of the stomach lining, often due to infection with the H. pylori bacteria. Symptoms include burning or gnawing abdominal pain that worsens with eating, nausea, and vomiting. Gastritis can lead to peptic ulcers if left untreated.

GERD occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back up into the esophagus. This acid reflux causes irritation and a burning feeling. Risk factors for GERD include obesity, smoking, pregnancy, and certain medications. Avoiding trigger foods, not eating before bedtime, and losing weight can help manage GERD.

Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop in the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or esophagus. The most common symptom is a burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen. Ulcers are often caused by H. pylori infection or frequent use of NSAID pain medications. Treatment involves antibiotics to eradicate the H. pylori infection plus medications to reduce stomach acid.

Functional dyspepsia refers to indigestion without an identifiable cause. Symptoms include upper abdominal pain or burning, bloating, nausea, and fullness after meals. Lifestyle changes like avoiding trigger foods, managing stress, and quitting smoking can help. Antacids may temporarily relieve discomfort.
