Did you know that staying hydrated is essential during the monsoon season due to the unique challenges this weather presents? Even though the weather may not feel as hot and muggy as it did over the summer, your body still needs to drink enough water regularly to stay healthy. Maintaining normal body functions, such as digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and toxin removal, requires adequate hydration.
The risk of contracting waterborne illnesses such as diarrhea, gastroenteritis, and cholera rises with the monsoon, emphasising the need for drinking clean, safe water to maintain your general health and immune system. Furthermore, you may sweat more in the high humidity—often without even noticing it—which might gradually cause you to lose fluids. Dehydration may result from this, leading to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, lightheadedness, and lowered immunity. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Rajeshwari Panda, the Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Medicover Hospitals in Navi Mumbai, discussed the significance of staying hydrated, especially during the monsoon season.
According to Dr. Rajeshwari, contrary to popular belief, staying hydrated is equally crucial during the monsoon as it is in the summer. While the cooler weather might tempt us to reduce our water intake, the reality is quite different.

Why Hydration Matters In Monsoon?
- Increased Humidity: Despite the cooler temperatures, the high humidity levels can lead to increased sweating. Our bodies work harder to cool down, resulting in fluid loss.
- Reduced Thirst Sensation: The cool weather can trick our bodies into thinking we don't need as much water, leading to dehydration.
- Immune System Boost: Adequate hydration supports a robust immune system, which is essential during the monsoon when infections are common.
- Digestive Health: Water aids in digestion and prevents constipation, which can be a common issue during this season.
- Skin And Hair Health: Hydration helps maintain healthy skin and hair, preventing dryness and other related issues.

What Are The Tips For Staying Hydrated?
- Drink Water Regularly: Aim for at least 8 glasses of water per day.
- Include Water-Rich Foods: Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, and spinach can contribute to your overall hydration.
- Limit Dehydrating Beverages: Reduce consumption of caffeinated drinks and alcohol.
- Be Mindful Of Electrolytes: If you're sweating excessively, consider electrolyte-rich drinks or foods.
Finally, Dr. Rajeshwari emphasized, even though you might not feel thirsty, your body still needs water to function optimally. Make hydration a priority, especially during the monsoon season.
