Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2025: Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti, also known as Rabindra Jayanti or Pochishe Boishakh, is celebrated annually on May 7, to mark the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, a Bengali polymath. Considered as one of India’s most celebrated poets, writers and cultural icons, Tagore reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the world-renowned Nobel laureate. Rabindra Jayanti honours his contribution towards Indian literature, music and culture. Tagore’s work continues to inspire generations and is remembered with great respect. Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2025 falls on May 7, that is, Wednesday. This year, Rabindra Jayanti celebrates the 164th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore and is a day to commemorate the achievements and legacy he left behind.

Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861, in Kolkata to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. Rabindra Jayanti is usually celebrated according to the Bengali calendar, on the 25th day of the month Boishakh and thus, this day is also called Pochishe Boishakh. Rabindra Jayanti 2025 falls on May 9 in West Bengal. However, in other parts of India, people will mark Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti on May 7. In Bangladesh, Rabindra Jayanti 2025 falls on May 8.

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2025 History

Rabindranath Tagore was the son of Sarada Devi and Debendranath Tagore and grew up in the iconic Jorasanko Thakurbari in Kolkata. He received his education at home and began writing at an early age and soon outshone many of his contemporaries. Tagore showed his expertise in the fields of literature and politics. His poems, songs, short stories, plays and novels are still admired by many. Tagore also wrote Jana Gana Mana, which became India’s national anthem. He also composed the national anthems for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. 

In 1913, Tagore made history as the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for ‘Gitanjali,’ which is a collection of sensitive Bengali poems. He delivered speeches at the World Parliament for Religions in 1929 and again in 1937. Rabindranath Tagore is often revered as the Bard of Bengal and is known by popular names including Gurudev, Kabiguru and Biswakabi.

Rabindra Jayanti or Pochishe Boishakh is more than just a birthday celebration of Rabindranath Tagore, but a cultural movement. In West Bengal and other Bengali communities worldwide, the day is celebrated with literary recitations, music, dance performances and exhibitions based on Tagore’s works. Educational institutions, cultural organisations, and fans of Tagore pay homage through Rabindra Sangeet (Tagore’s songs), dramas, poetry readings and lectures.

Tagore wrote around 2,230 songs and painted nearly 3,000 paintings. He also founded isva Bharati University at Shantiniketan, located in Bolpur, West Bengal. His works advocate for harmony, empathy and the celebration of diversity. Rabindra Jayanti celebrations help inspire the younger generation to learn about his life and achievements.
