Adult Acne: Acne is no longer considered a concern of teenagers but has evolved as a skincare problem of adults as well. In recent times, more adults than ever are experiencing breakouts in their 30s, 40s and beyond. There are several factors that have led to the rise in adult acne, like hormonal imbalances, chronic stress, environmental pollution and fast-paced lifestyles. Unlike adolescent acne, adult acne tends to be more persistent, deeply rooted and often tied to internal health issues. This growing skin issue has made adults seek out safer, sustainable ways to care for their skin.
Clearer skin doesn’t mean harsh treatments or expensive prescriptions. Instead, embracing a holistic, natural approach including gently cleaning, mindful nutrition, stress management and others, can offer long-lasting relief. In conversation with Jagran English, Dr Rakhi Maiti, Founder of Regoras, Advanced Cosmetologist and Aromatherapist, shares insights on why adult acne is rising and how to treat it naturally.
Types Of Adult Acne
Dr Rakhi Maiti mentions that adults face two types of acne, namely Acne Vulgaris and Acne Rosacea. Acne Vulgaris includes blackheads, whiteheads, and painful breakouts, whereas Acne Rosacea includes persistent redness and bumps, often mistaken for skin allergies.
Causes Of Adult Acne
The causes of adult acne are deeply rooted in both internal and external imbalances. Dr Rakhi Maiti states, “hormonal fluctuations, especially in women dealing with PCOS, pregnancy, or menopause, are major triggers.” She adds, “chronic stress, inadequate sleep, rising pollution, and the overuse of chemical-laden skincare products” are equally responsible for adult acne. Besides, processed foods, sugar-rich diets and poor gut health are major causes of adult acne.

Tips To Treat Adult Acne
Dr Rakhi Maiti advises that “cleansing is non-negotiable, but it must be gentle. Over-cleansing or using harsh products weakens the skin barrier.” Besides, she shares some mindful habits that need to be practised to treat adult acne.
Do not squeeze or pick acne, it worsens inflammation and increases the risk of scarring.
Apply an ice compress wrapped in a clean cloth to reduce swelling and redness.
Hydrate well. Drink at least 3 to 4 litres of water daily, and consume water-rich fruits like cucumber, watermelon and citrus.
Manage stress through yoga, breathwork or mindfulness practices.
Ensure 7-8 hours of restful sleep every night.
