A sleep problem called insomnia is characterized by an on-going difficulty falling or staying asleep, which prevents one from getting enough rest and impairs one's ability to go about everyday activities. Many factors, such as stress, worry, depression, or lifestyle choices, can lead to this prevalent disorder. Having trouble falling asleep, waking up a lot during the night, or waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep are all signs of insomnia.
Beyond just making you tired and drowsy, insomnia has negative effects on your mood, cognitive abilities, and general well-being. Managing and resolving insomnia and achieving a higher quality of life require adopting appropriate sleep hygiene practices and treating underlying disorders.

Dr. Rakesh Gupta, who is a senior consultant and academic advisor in internal medicine at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi, exclusively told Jagran English about why insomnia happens and what the ways are to deal with it.
According to Dr. Rakesh, "Insomnia, a common sleep disorder, is characterized by difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, resulting in impaired daytime functioning. Understanding the underlying causes is crucial for effective management. Various factors contribute to insomnia, encompassing psychological, medical, and environmental elements."
In addition, he said, "Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression often play a pivotal role in insomnia. Heightened arousal and racing thoughts can impede the natural transition into sleep, leading to a disrupted sleep pattern. Additionally, medical conditions like chronic pain, respiratory disorders, or hormonal imbalances can contribute to sleep disturbances. Environmental factors, including an irregular sleep schedule, excessive exposure to electronic devices, or an uncomfortable sleep environment, can exacerbate insomnia. Furthermore, lifestyle choices such as excessive caffeine intake, irregular exercise, or certain medications may also contribute to sleep disruptions."

At last, Dr. Rakesh said, "Managing insomnia involves a multifaceted approach. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has demonstrated efficacy by addressing maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors associated with sleep. Relaxation techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation or mindfulness meditation, can help alleviate anxiety and promote a more conducive sleep environment. Implementing good sleep hygiene practices is imperative. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a dark and quiet sleep environment, and limiting electronic device usage before bedtime contribute to improved sleep quality. Addressing underlying medical conditions through appropriate medical interventions is essential for comprehensive management."
