Prostate well-being is crucial among men's overall health, particularly over the age of 40 years. The prostate is a tiny gland measuring approximately the size of a walnut in men that is responsible for semen production. Despite its minute size, it has the potential to bring enormous health issues if neglected. Prostate enlargement, inflammation as well as cancer are increasingly on the rise due to the longevity of men. Sadly, most prostate issues have no early symptoms, they're why awareness and check-ups are essential. Knowing the risks and how to avoid them can keep men healthy and prevent problems later in life.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Shalabh Agrawal, Consultant, Urology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram explained why prostate health is important.

Why Early Detection Matters?

Prostate issues are more prevalent with age.

Issues that are common include-

- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – non-cancerous prostatic enlargement

- Prostatitis – prostate inflammation

- Prostate cancer – a leading male cancer

Most of these conditions have no early signs.

Early detection aids in early treatment and improved results.

Tests Used for Screening

1. PSA Blood Test: Tests for the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. Elevated levels may show prostate issues.

2. Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): The doctor inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to check for prostate irregularities.

When to Get Screened?

1. Men 50 years and older should have regular screening.

2. Men 45 years old should begin earlier if they have a history of prostate cancer in the family and are in high-risk groups (e.g., African or South Asian origin).

Tips For Keeping Your Prostate Healthy

2. Exercise regularly to be at a healthy weight.

3. Quit smoking and avoid excessive alcohol.

4. Stay well-hydrated and restrict caffeine.
