The warm, humid air during the monsoon season increases the risk of UTIs and vaginal infections by encouraging the growth of bacteria and fungi. Sweat and damp clothes, combined with the extra moisture in the air, create the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and cause infections.
To prevent these infections, it is imperative to practice excellent hygiene during this time. Moisture buildup can be minimized by wearing clean, dry clothes, particularly cotton underwear. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help flush out bacteria from the urinary system, reducing the risk of UTIs. It's also important to avoid prolonged urine retention, as this can promote bacterial growth in the bladder.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sneha Rajiv, a Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Manipal Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore, discussed the steep rise in UTIs and vaginal infections during the monsoon.
According to Dr. Sneha, increased humidity in the genital area during the monsoon season can create an environment conducive to infections. Vaginal infections may present with symptoms such as itching, white discharge, and pain or discomfort during intercourse or urination. On the other hand, urinary tract infections (UTIs) often cause frequent and painful urination, a burning sensation during urination, generalized discomfort, lower back pain, and fever.
Understanding the factors that can trigger genital infections, including both vaginal and urinary infections, and taking preventive measures is particularly important during this season.

Causes Of Vaginal And Urinary Tract Infections:
Prolonged Urine Retention: Holding urine for extended periods can create an environment conducive to bacterial growth, leading to urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Short Urethra In Women: The anatomically shorter urethra in women increases susceptibility to UTIs, as bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to reach the bladder.
Tight Synthetic Underwear: Wearing tight, non-breathable underwear can trap moisture and heat, fostering bacterial growth in the genital area.

Excessive Use Of Vaginal Washes And Douching: Overuse of these products can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and pH in the vagina, increasing the risk of infections.
Improper Wiping Technique: Wiping from back to front can introduce bacteria from the anus into the vaginal and urinary tracts, heightening the risk of infection.
Infrequent Sanitary Napkin Changes: Not changing sanitary napkins regularly can lead to bacterial buildup, causing itching, irritation, and infection in the genital area.
Shaving the Pubic Area: Shaving can create tiny nicks in the skin, making the vulvar and vaginal areas more vulnerable to infections.
Precautions To Prevent Vaginal And Urinary Tract Infections:
- Drink plenty of water to help flush out bacteria and maintain urinary tract health.
- Empty your bladder regularly to reduce the risk of bacterial buildup.
- Change sanitary products regularly to prevent bacterial growth and maintain hygiene.
- Avoid using public restrooms when possible to reduce exposure to potential sources of infection.
- Wear loose, comfortable cotton underwear during the day and consider sleeping without underwear to promote natural aeration of the genital area.
- Always wipe from front to back after using the restroom to prevent the spread of bacteria from the anus to the vagina and urethra.
- Avoid unnecessary douching or excessive use of vaginal washes to maintain the natural balance of bacteria.
- Incorporate probiotics into your diet to support healthy vaginal flora and limit intake of sugars, baked goods, confectioneries, and junk food.
- Eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet to support overall immunity and reduce infection risk.
Finally, Dr. Sneha emphasized that leaving vaginal and urinary tract infections untreated may lead to serious complications. Moreover, these infections can also cause considerable psychological and emotional effects, including embarrassment, social isolation, distress, depression, and sexual dysfunction. Therefore, early identification and treatment are crucial.
