Winter requires special attention to skincare. The cold, dry air and indoor heating create unique challenges, making skin hydration essential. Low humidity levels can lead to trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), causing dehydration. To address this, use clinically proven moisturisers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin to lock in moisture. Apply moisturisers immediately after showering to protect the skin’s barrier. Gentle cleansing is equally important to avoid stripping natural oils. Opt for mild, pH-balanced, fragrance-free cleansers, and avoid prolonged exposure to hot water. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Shikha Khare, a consultant dermatologist at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital in Noida Extension, shared tips for winter skincare.

According to Dr. Shikha Khare, sunscreen is just as crucial in winter as it is in summer. UV rays can still damage your skin, especially when reflected by snow. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply when spending extended time outdoors. Indoor heating reduces humidity levels significantly, so using a humidifier can help maintain optimal indoor moisture. Exfoliation is beneficial for removing dead skin cells that accumulate during winter, enhancing skin brightness.

Dr. Shikha Khare advises using gentle exfoliants containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) once or twice a week, avoiding abrasive scrubbing. Limit hot showers, as they can strip your skin’s natural oils, and use a cotton towel to pat your skin dry after bathing. Protect your skin from harsh winter conditions by wearing layers, gloves, scarves, and hats.

A balanced diet rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids, combined with proper hydration, supports skin health from within. For severe skin issues or persistent symptoms, consult a dermatologist for personalized winter skincare advice. This may include clinical treatments like topical steroids if necessary.
