Winter vibes are all about sips of hot coffee, snuggling in a cosy, warm blanket and binge-watching your favourite Netflix series. But, let's not forget about the other side of winter i.e. dry skin. The primary culprit behind winter skin dryness is the drop in humidity. As the air becomes drier, skin loses moisture, leading to a variety of issues like flakiness, roughness and even itching.
Additionally, cold temperatures can constrict blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the skin and hindering its ability to retain moisture but with a few simple changes to your skincare routine and the use of natural ingredients, you can keep the skin hydrated and healthy throughout the season.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Ms. Natasha Tuli, Co-Founder, Soulflower and Clean Beauty Expert listed some effective natural ways to combat dry skin during winter.
Ways To Prevent Skin Dryness During Winter
Increase Moisture
As the air becomes drier in winter, it's essential to increase the moisture content of the skin. Use a thicker moisturizer and apply it more frequently than during other seasons.
Exfoliate Gently
Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, leaving the skin feeling smoother and softer. However, be gentle as excessive exfoliation can further dry out the skin.
Protect From Harsh Weather
Shield the skin from cold winds and harsh weather by wearing a scarf, hat and gloves. This will help prevent moisture loss and protect the skin from damage.
Avoid Hot Showers
While hot showers may feel good in the winter, they can strip the skin of natural oils.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining healthy skin year-round, but it's especially important during the dry winter months.
Avoid Harsh Soaps and Cleansers
These can strip the skin of natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. For the face, opt for gentle, moisturizing cleansers that don’t contain harsh ingredients. For body skin, make sure to use gentle soaps made with natural, pure oils and ingredients, nothing else! That will help replenish the skin’s natural moisture level.
Don't Skip Sunscreen
Even though the sun may not be as strong in winter, it's still important to protect the skin from harmful UV rays.
Moreover, the expert also listed some natural ingredients and skin care tips to prevent winter dryness.
Humectants
Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and urea are excellent humectants that draw moisture into the skin.
Natural Oils
Olive oil, coconut oil and almond oil can nourish and hydrate the skin.
Eat a Healthy Diet
A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats can support overall skin health.
Consider Supplements: Some people find that supplements like omega-3 fatty acids or vitamin E can help improve skin hydration and elasticity.
By following these tips and incorporating natural ingredients into your skincare routine, you can effectively protect the skin from drying in winter and maintain a healthy and glowing complexion.
