Women’s Equality Day 2023: Today, on August 26, people are celebrating this special day. Women's Equality Day 2023: History

The history of Women’s Equality Day goes back to the year 1920. The 19th Amendment of the US Constitution was certified on August 26, 1920, which prohibits the federal and state governments from denying the right to vote on the basis of gender. This special occasion of Women’s Equality Day was first observed in the year 1971 when the fight for women’s equality and the Equal Rights Amendment. Women’s Equality Day marked its 50th anniversary on August 26, 1970, when the National Organisation for Women (NOW) urged women to participate in a statewide ‘strike for equality.’

The theme for Women’s Equality Day 2023 is “Embrace Equality.” Women’s Equality Day 2022 was celebrated around the theme of “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow, recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.”
