World Breastfeeding Week 2023: The global campaign of ‘World Breastfeeding Week 2023’ is observed from August 1 to 7 every year to spread awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and its importance for newborn babies. This campaign is supported by WHO, UNICEF and many Ministries of Health and civil society partners. The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2023 is “Let's make breastfeeding and work, work” and aims to focus on breastfeeding and work, providing a strategic opportunity to advocate for essential maternity rights that support breastfeeding.

While breastfeeding is of utmost importance for newborn babies, it is also vital for lactating mothers to keep a check on their own health. According to Dr Manisha Khalane, Lactation Consultant at Surya Mother and Child Super Speciality Hospital, Pune, breastfeeding mothers often face various challenges that hinder their ability to provide nourishment to their infants. Some mothers struggle with issues like flat or inverted nipples, leading to feeding difficulties, concerns arise when dealing with low baby weight or premature births, which can affect milk production. Dr Khalane listed some important things that feeding mothers should keep in mind for their health and hygiene.

Watch the video below to know about common problems faced by lactating mothers:

1. Antenatal Education

Antenatal education refers to birth and parenting classes that guide you through labour, birth, breastfeeding and caring for a newborn baby. Dr Khalane says that it is imperative to begin antenatal education and counselling involving both mothers and fathers in the process. Ensuring skilled assistance post-delivery is crucial for sustained breastfeeding success, emphasising the importance of continuous family education and support.

2. Healthy Diet

When it comes to the health of lactating mothers, the nutrition that mothers take is crucial in determining the health of the baby. Dr Khalane advocates that focusing on healthy choices and self-care benefits both mother and baby.

3. Hydration

Along with maintaining a healthy diet, hydration also plays a key role in the health of lactating mothers. A well-hydrated body is better equipped to support both milk production and the mother's overall physiological functions, says Dr Khalane.

4. Consistent Self-Examinations

Breast self-examinations are integral as they are screenings that help detect the presence of any diseases of breast cancer. Dr Khalane says that consistent breast self-examinations serve as an essential practice for identifying any potential issues or concerns, allowing for timely intervention and management.

5. Self Care

A mother’s health can be on a toll when she gets completely engaged in taking care of her infant. Therefore, it is necessary to practise acts of self-care towards oneself. Dr Khalane advises that seeking emotional support from loved ones or healthcare professionals can contribute significantly to managing the challenges that might arise during breastfeeding.
