World COPD Day 2023: COPD or Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. The global campaign of World COPD Day is observed on the 3rd Wednesday of November, which is November 15 this year. This healthcare event aims to raise awareness about the causes, prevention and treatment of this health condition.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, causing 3.23 million deaths in 2019. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Ravi Shekhar Jha, Director & HOD, Pulmonology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad explained how one can reduce the risk of COPD.

According to Dr Jha, preventing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) hinges significantly on lifestyle choices and proactive health management. The primary approach revolves around avoiding risk factors and adopting practices that promote respiratory health.

Ways To Prevent COPD

1. Smoking

The leading cause of COPD is smoking, making smoking cessation the cornerstone of prevention. Quitting smoking dramatically decreases the risk of developing COPD and slows its progression in diagnosed individuals. Strategies like nicotine replacement therapy, counselling, or support groups can aid in quitting. Secondhand smoke exposure is also a risk factor for COPD. Minimising exposure to environments where others smoke is vital in prevention.

2. Pollution

Reducing exposure to environmental pollutants, chemicals, and dust is essential. In certain work environments, using protective gear and adhering to safety protocols can mitigate exposure.

3. Indoor Air Quality

Improving indoor air quality by proper ventilation and using air purifiers helps reduce indoor pollutants, which can aggravate respiratory conditions.

4. Exercise

Regular exercise contributes significantly to lung function and overall health. Engaging in physical activity helps maintain healthy lungs and enhances the body's capacity to utilise oxygen.

5. Healthy Diet

A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides essential nutrients that support respiratory health. Adequate hydration also assists in maintaining optimal lung function.

6. Vaccination And Regular Checkups

Additionally, getting vaccinated against flu and pneumonia is crucial, as respiratory infections can worsen COPD symptoms. Regular check-ups with healthcare professionals aid in early detection and management of respiratory issues. Tailored advice can address individual risks and provide effective strategies for prevention.

Dr Jha concluded by saying that by proactively addressing these factors through lifestyle adjustments and seeking professional guidance, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing COPD and manage the condition more effectively if diagnosed.
