World COPD Day 2025: World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day is observed on November 19, serving as a reminder to manage lung health through critical times when chronic respiratory problems are also on the rise globally. COPD is a chronic condition affecting the lungs and making breathing difficult. It is not only a smoker's problem; it affects millions because of pollution, poor air quality and unhealthy lifestyles. Doctors and experts highlight that to keep the lungs healthy, it is not just about avoiding bad habits but about making simple, everyday lifestyle changes.

World COPD Day 2025, which calls attention to the theme of preventive care, reminds us that healthy lungs are built by consistent, everyday choices. While breathing may be easy, maintaining strong lungs requires deliberate effort. Doctors place importance on adopting simple daily routines, involving quitting smoking, staying physically active and others that help strengthen the lungs. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Praveen Kumar Pandey, Senior Director – Pulmonology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, shares six daily habits to practice to keep lungs healthy on World COPD Day 2025.

Everyday Habits That Can Reduce Your Risk of Developing COPD

1. Quit Smoking And Stay Away From Second-Hand Smoke

Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Dr. Praveen Kumar Pandey states, “Cigarette smoke inflames and damages the airways, slowly reducing lung function. If you smoke, quitting is the most important step you can take for your health.” Even if you’ve tried before, don’t give up - many people attempt several times before succeeding. Non-smokers should also protect themselves: avoid being around smoke-filled environments, as secondhand smoke is harmful too.

2. Keep Your Home Air Clean

Indoor air pollution is often overlooked, but it can irritate the lungs. Use good ventilation while cooking, especially if using gas stoves. Avoid burning incense or candles excessively. If you live in an area with heavy pollution or dust, consider an air purifier. Keeping your home clean, dust-free, and mold-free can also reduce respiratory irritation.

3. Protect Yourself From Occupational Exposure

Many people develop COPD because they breathe harmful particles or chemicals at work. Jobs involving dust, smoke, welding fumes, or chemical vapours can damage the lungs over time. Dr. Praveen Kumar Pandey says, “If your work environment exposes you to such hazards, always use proper protective equipment like masks or respirators.” Regular breaks and adequate ventilation also make a big difference.

4. Stay Physically Active

Exercise strengthens not just your muscles but also your lungs. Regular physical activity helps your body use oxygen more efficiently and improves your breathing capacity. Dr. Praveen Kumar Pandey mentions, “You don’t need intense workouts - brisk walking, cycling, yoga, or even simple stretching at home can help.” Aim for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.

5. Prevent Respiratory Infections

Repeated lung infections can accelerate lung damage and increase the risk of COPD. You can protect yourself by:

  • Washing your hands often
  • Wearing a mask in crowded or polluted places when needed
  • Staying up to date with vaccinations, including flu and pneumonia shots
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick

Even a common cold can lead to complications in vulnerable individuals, so prevention is key.

6. Maintain A Healthy Diet And Stay Hydrated

Good nutrition supports overall lung health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps your immune system stay strong. Dr. Praveen Kumar Pandey states, “Staying hydrated keeps your airway mucus thin, allowing your lungs to function more effectively. A healthy weight also reduces the effort your lungs must make while breathing.”

COPD is largely preventable, and these simple habits can significantly reduce your risk. You don’t need to make all the changes at once - start with one or two and build gradually. Your lungs work tirelessly for you every second of the day; taking small daily steps can keep them healthier for years to come. If you have a persistent cough, breathlessness, or chest tightness, consult a doctor early. Early detection saves lives.
