World Hypertension Day 2025: World Hypertension Day 2025 falls on May 17 to raise awareness about hypertension (high blood pressure), its risk, the importance of early detection and its effective management. The theme of World Hypertension Day 2025 is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!” This global initiative aims to educate people about healthy lifestyle choice, regular monitoring of blood pressure levels, and dietary habits that plays a major role in controlling it. Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, occurs when the blood pressure in the vessels is very high, that is, 140/90 mmHg or higher in terms of systolic pressure. Although there are medicines to manage hypertension, summer foods also play a major role in controlling it.

Summer foods are hydrating, rich in potassium, antioxidants and low in sodium, all of which are beneficial for heart health. A wide variety of summer fruits and vegetables can help regulate blood pressure, apart from keeping the body cool. These summer foods can also reduce the sodium’s impact in the body and improve overall cardiovascular health. Here are the summer foods that help control blood pressure levels naturally.

Top Summer Foods To Control High Blood Pressure

Watermelon

Watermelon is a summer favourite that's over 90% water, making it incredibly hydrating. It contains L-citrulline, an amino acid that helps improve blood flow and may support arterial function, which can help lower blood pressure. Its rich potassium content also helps balance out the effects of sodium in the body.

Tomatoes

Juicy summer tomatoes are a staple in every kitchen. Packed with lycopene, an antioxidant linked to lower blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. They are rich in potassium and vitamin C, making them ideal for heart health. Tomatoes can be added to salads, soups juices or even as the base of curries, during the hot season.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are cool and crunchy, providing hydration and refreshment that are ideal for maintaining blood pressure. Cucumbers are low in calories and high in potassium, which helps relax blood vessels and excrete sodium through urine, both of which are vital for maintaining healthy pressure levels.

Coconut water is synonymous with summer, making it an excellent alternative to sugary beverages. The natural, sweet summer drink helps regulate fluid balance and lower blood pressure, especially after sweating in the heat.
