World Lion Day 2023: The occasion of World Lion Day is being celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. Every year on August 10, World Lion Day is commemorated to spread awareness about the protection and conservation of lions, who are known as the ‘King of Jungle.’ The occasion plays a pivotal role in understanding the conservation and safeguarding of lions. It provides us with an opportunity to educate people about the difficulties that lions encounter across the world and put forth efforts for their protection. On this special occasion, we have brought you a list of lion reserves in India that you must visit to see lions in their habitat.
1. Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in Madhya Pradesh, Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1981. The sanctuary is spread over around 344.686 km and was given the status of a national park in 2018. This sanctuary is home to several endangered species such as the Indian wolf, leopard and many others.
2. Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated in the South-East part of Pratapgarh and Chittaurgarh districts of Rajasthan, this wildlife sanctuary spans an area of around 422.95 square kilometres. It was declared a protected forest reserve in 1979 by the Rajasthan government. It is popular for its flora including rivers, flowing through the dense forest.
3. Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary
Also known as Chandraprabha, this wildlife sanctuary is located in the Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1957 and was a popular tourist attraction for the sightseeing of Asiatic lions. The Chandraprabha wildlife sanctuary is home to several animals such as leopard, hyena, wolf, wild boar, nilgai, sambar deer, chinkara, chital, blackbuck, gharial, python and many species of birds.
4. Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Another lion reserve in Rajasthan, Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the Kumbhalgarh fortress. The sanctuary is famous for its 40-strong wolf pack which is rare to be found anywhere else in the country.
5. Barda Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in Gujarat, Barda wildlife sanctuary is home to diverse fauna such as lions, crocodiles, sambar, chinkara, leopard, wolf, chameleon and many others. It was established in 1949 and before that, it was a private reserve for Porbandar and Jamnagar.
