World Mosquito Day 2024: Every year on 20 August, World Mosquito Day is observed to raise awareness of the serious threats that mosquitoes pose to public health and the continuous efforts being made to mitigate their effects. This day marks the 1897 discovery by British physician Sir Ronald Ross of the connection between malaria and mosquitoes. His research emphasised the significance of controlling mosquitoes to avoid sickness and established the groundwork for our current understanding of how malaria is spread by mosquitoes.

More than just a bother, mosquitoes are key carriers of numerous fatal diseases that impact millions of people globally. Comprehending the diverse kinds of mosquitoes and the illnesses they spread is essential for implementing efficient measures for prevention and management. Here is a list of varieties of mosquitoes and the fatal diseases they spread. 

Deadly Diseases Spread By Mosquitoes

Anopheles Mosquitoes

One of the most severe illnesses spread by mosquitoes is malaria, which is mostly carried by Anopheles mosquitoes. Although they can also be found in temperate zones, these mosquitoes are primarily found in tropical and subtropical areas.

Aedes Mosquitoes

Aedes mosquitoes are well-known for their involvement in the spread of several well-known diseases. Common diseases caused by this mosquito include dengue fever, zika virus and chikungunya.

Culex Mosquitoes

Culex mosquitoes are widespread around the world and are known for their ability to spread several diseases. In tropical and temperate climates, they are more common. Culex mosquitoes or Culex pipiens are the primary vectors of the West Nile virus and Japanese Encephalitis.

Mansonia Mosquitoes

Although they are less widespread, mansonia mosquitoes are nevertheless important carriers in some areas. Mansonia mosquitoes are the vectors of the parasitic illness elephantiasis.

Sabethes Mosquitoes

Although fewer in number, Sabethes mosquitoes have a reputation for spreading specific diseases in particular areas. In forested locations with shady, stagnant water sources, such as tree holes and bromeliads, Sabethes mosquitoes reproduce.
