World Music Day 2024: Also known as ‘Fête de la Musique’, the special occasion of World Music Day is celebrated annually on June 21 to promote music and its universal language. On World Music Day, people are urged to play music outside in their neighbourhoods or public spaces such as parks. The main purpose of this occasion is to promote music and amateur and professional musicians are encouraged to perform on the streets, under the slogan ‘Faites de la musique’. 

World Music Day 2024 History

World Music Day was founded in France in 1982 with a rich background and history. Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture at the time, composer Maurice Fleuret, and a radio producer who doubled as a music journalist proposed the idea of establishing a day devoted to music. On June 21, the summer solstice, singers and musicians gather in public spaces to honour the transformative power of music.

By using music as a common language, World Music Day seeks to advance musical diversity and build a sense of community. Paris observed the inaugural World Music Day on June 21, 1982. The festival was a great success, with over a thousand musicians and singers performing in the parks and on the streets. Since then, people have celebrated this occasion all around the world. 

World Music Day 2024 Significance

The objective of World Music Day is to elevate music to the level of an art form that is more approachable for people of all ages. Creating an open environment, encouraging people to listen to a variety of musical genres, and embracing art for future generations are all honoured. A significant part of our daily life is music. Everybody enjoys listening to music while they go about their everyday tasks, whether it's travelling, finishing homework, or simply cooking. Music truly is our best friend. 

World Music Day 2024 Theme

The theme of World Music Day 2024 has not been disclosed yet. While in 2023 the celebrations took place under the theme ‘Music on the intersections” with great grandeur and enthusiasm.
