World No Tobacco Day 2024: Every year on May 31, the world observes World No Tobacco Day to raise awareness of the negative effects that tobacco usage and smoking have on people. According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1,600 young people try cigarettes for the first time every day, accounting for an estimated 28.3 million adults.
While smoking can kill us, it also causes some of the worst ailments that are fatal to our general health before we even die. The following is a list of various deadly illnesses brought on by heavy tobacco usage and smoking.
Diseases Caused By Smoking And Tobacco
Heart Diseases
Almost one in four deaths is related to cardiovascular disease, which is also largely caused by smoking. The American Heart Association reports that heart disease is the primary cause of death in the country, accounting for approximately 800,000 fatalities annually. Approximately 20% of them are attributable to cigarette smoking.
Diabetes
Compared to non-smokers, cigarette smokers have a 30 to 40% increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it raises the chance of consequences like nerve damage, poor blood flow to the legs and feet, heart and renal illness, and poor circulation after diabetes is diagnosed.

According to the CDC, asthma is frequently triggered by tobacco smoke. Everyone is harmed by tobacco smoking, including secondhand smoke, but asthmatics are more vulnerable. The gases and tiny particles that make up secondhand smoke include tobacco product smoke from burning cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.
Lung Cancer
Roughly 80% to 90% of lung cancer deaths are related to cigarette smoking. Lung cancer risk also rises when using other tobacco products, such as pipes or cigars. The combination of over 7,000 compounds in tobacco smoke is poisonous. It is the third most prevalent cancer in the United States and is brought on by dangerous cells in the lungs spreading out of control.
Stroke
A stroke, often known as a Brain Attack, happens when a blood vessel in the brain breaks or when something stops the blood supply to a portion of the brain. Secondhand smoke raises the risk of stroke by 20–30%, according to the CDC. Every year, exposure to secondhand smoke results in about 8,000 stroke deaths.
