Diet is extremely important for both managing and preventing osteoporosis. Maintaining strong and healthy bones requires a diet that is well-balanced and high in calcium, vitamin D, and other necessary minerals. A key component of bone density is calcium, which is predominantly found in dairy products, fortified meals, and leafy greens.

A sufficient protein intake is also essential for bone health since it aids in bone tissue development and repair. On the other side, consuming too much sodium, alcohol, or caffeine can be detrimental to bone health.

For people with or without osteoporosis, a diet that combines these nutrients with regular exercise enhances bone strength, lowers the risk of fractures, and helps people live healthier, more active lifestyles.

Dr.Vinayak Ghanate, who is a consultant in orthopaedics at Manipal Hospital in Baner, Pune, exclusively told Jagran English about the role of diet in osteoporosis.

Dr.Vinayak said, "osteoporosis is a health condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. It develops slowly over the years and is often only diagnosed when, after a fall or sudden impact, somebody develops a fracture or breaks their bone."

What Are The Risk Factors For Osteoporosis?

Dr.Vinayak added, "women are at more risk for osteoporosis than men. Apart from that, somebody who has a family history of osteoporosis is also at greater risk. With that high body mass index, somebody is on medical treatment on tablets like steroids, somebody who has rheumatoid arthritis, heavy drinking and smoking, or an overactive thyroid gland are some of the risk factors for osteoporosis. Apart from that, malabsorption problems like GI disease or disorders and certain medicines used for cancer are also risk factors for developing osteoporosis."

How To Treat Osteoporosis?

Dr.Vinayak said, "if somebody has a medical condition and needs specific treatment, and that is why they are developing osteoporosis, then they need to get the proper treatment for that medical condition and also get advice from the experts and specialists for treatment of osteoporosis after the investigation and the scans on their bone. But, as we say, prevention is better than cure. So preventing osteoporosis by making some changes in the lifestyle is always beneficial. What are these changes? We need to indulge in regular exercises, and these exercises have to be weight-bearing exercises or resistance exercises like walking."
